The Letter (1940) follows the story of a rubber plantation administrator's wife who fatally shoots a man and asserts that it was an act of self-defense. Her calm demeanor, elegance, and composure leave a strong impression on nearly everyone she encounters. Her husband, the district officer, and even her lawyer are convinced of her innocence. However, in the colonial setting of Singapore, the disgruntled locals are eager to discredit this accused murderess.
