The young Alberto Ruotolo leaves his country house to enlist as bersagliere. Once enrolled, he finds in the barracks three bully and unruly Bersaglieri, Giulio Cesare, the eldest, Renato and Ferruccio. Initially the three, all enamored of Maria, the daughter of the quartermaster Carocci, do not lose the opportunity to play nasty tricks on Alberto, because he's Maria's favorite. At the end the four end up becoming friends and resign themselves to the girl, unwillingly. Renato then meets again Nadia, the one who a few years before had to be his bride, and who is now a dancer in the variety after leaving the countryside. But suddenly war breaks out in Tripoli, Libya, and the Bersaglieri are forced to participate. Unable to stay separated from their boyfriends, Nadia and Maria are able to enlist as Red Cross nurses and reach them in Libya.
