Pickup on South Street (1953) follows a chain of events set in motion when a woman named Candy, while traveling on the subway to deliver a roll of film she believes holds corporate secrets, has her wallet snatched by a pickpocket named Skip McCoy. Unbeknownst to her, the film contains sensitive government information intended for "the Commies," and Candy has been under the watchful eye of government agents. Although the agents witness the theft, Skip manages to evade them. Desperate to retrieve the film, Joey, Candy's former lover and the individual who enlisted her as a courier, persuades her to locate the thief. Candy traces Skip through her street connections, while the police also close in on him. Eventually, Skip comprehends that the film is far more valuable than he initially thought, and its worth could even be a matter of life and death for some.
