Martin Boyne (Fredric March), a man in his forties, comes to Europe after 5 years, to meet Rose Sellers with who he has been distantly in love for years, exchanging a lot of letters, and now she is waiting for him. But Boyne runs into the seven Wheater offspring and step-siblings. The children belong to his old friends the Wheater’s, who lead a very Bohemian lifestyle and Boyne is drawn into their gypsy like wonderland. This begins to interfere with his plan to marry the endlessly patient and understanding Mrs. Sellers, who competes with the children for his love. Boyne is torn between his sympathy for the children and his old romantic claim, and he zigzags from one extreme to the other.
