Roustabout (1964)

1964 · Movie · 101 min. · United States

Roustabout (1964) follows the journey of Elvis Presley as Charlie Rogers, a rebellious biker who finds himself in a series of misfortunes. After being dismissed from a singing gig due to a brawl with college toughs, Charlie's troubles escalate when a disgruntled father forces him off the road while he is en route to his next performance. Stranded and in need of repairs for his motorcycle, Charlie joins a wandering carnival troupe. The carnival is managed by a stern matriarch (Barbara Stanwyck), a former alcoholic (Leif Ericson), and his attractive daughter (Joan Freeman). Throughout his time with the carnival, Charlie, who struggles with feelings of abandonment due to his orphan status, gains insights into the importance of family and unity. Pat Buttram adds a layer of intrigue as a cunning rival carny, inspired by the real-life figure of Elvis Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
