What is a museum? Tourists hasten from one exhibition to another, devouring random fragments of culture like pigs gorging on scraps. More discriminating visitors are transported to the heights of sublime ecstasy by the bits of tat that takes their fancy. A minister considers the appropriate thing to say in front of a photographic display of sexual organs, whilst the curator is struggling to overcome his phobia of green plants. A musuem is not the collection of dead things on the walls or in the display cabinets, but the living human material that fills the crowded salons...
