Foolish Wives (1922) follows the story of a cunning Russian émigré who, after World War I, rents a villa near Monte Carlo and assumes the guise of a count. With the help of two of his paramours, who pose as his cousins, he devises a plan to exploit unsuspecting women and residents of Monte Carlo. Their scheme involves ingratiating themselves with the American ambassador and his naive wife. Mrs. Hughes, seeking excitement, falls for the Count's charms. As the Count spins a tale of needing 90,000 francs to Mrs. Hughes, a jealous maid sets the house ablaze. Both manage to escape the fire, but the Count ultimately faces the consequences of his deceitful actions.
