Barilot and Gontrand are both in love with the same woman. They fight each other in a dual; Gontrand triumphs and Barilot flees. Six months after the wedding the woman appears to be very lavish with money. When Gontrand confronts her about this, she runs away to Barilot. When she returns, she finds an abandoned house. In the farewell letter from Gontrand he tells her that she will find a last memento of him on the banks of the Po. She finds Gontrand's clothes there and assumes that he has drowned. The woman marries Barilot and three months after their wedding, Barilot also finds out that the woman is not very economical when it comes to spending money, to which a smiling Gontrand appears on the scene.
