Orphans of the Storm (1921) follows the journey of Henriette and Louise, two young women who, despite being foundlings, are nurtured as sisters. When Louise loses her sight, Henriette vows to protect and care for her forever. Their path leads them to Paris in search of a cure for Louise's blindness, but their lives take a dramatic turn when a nobleman becomes infatuated with Henriette and forcibly separates them. Chevalier de Vaudrey, a kind-hearted individual, offers Henriette solace and love amidst the turmoil. As the French Revolution unfolds, the corrupt aristocracy is replaced by the equally corrupt regime of Robespierre. De Vaudrey, known for his kindness to the common people, is sentenced to death for his noble lineage, and Henriette faces the same fate for sheltering him. The fate of the couple rests in the hands of revolutionary hero Danton, who stands as the sole advocate for mercy within the new government. Will Danton's efforts be enough to spare them from the guillotine?
