The artist, Andrew Darel, is anxiously awaiting the result of the Hermosa competition; his room is invaded by fellow-artists and others, who crown him with laurels and inform him that he is the lucky winner of the purse of money. Amid a scene of gaiety he takes his departure for Italy, and one day, when admiring the beautiful view from Sorrento, he hears a voice singing among the orange trees. A closer view reveals to him a beautiful girl clad in the picturesque garments of the country gathering oranges. Wishing to make her further acquaintance, he advances to meet her and learns that she is alone in the world, and named Graziella the Gypsy. The painter when engaged in painting the various views of the place is always accompanied by the gypsy, who falls in love with him and engraves with the point of a knife their initials on the bark of a tree. One day the painter, when taking a short sea voyage, happens to meet a young Parisian lady, who captivates the young man with her graceful...
