September 11 was the most notorious event in recent american history. Everyone knows what happened that day. But beyond the media scrutiny, what do people really know of the men who carried out the attacks? What do they know of their origins, of how they came together, of what drove them towards Islamic fundamentalism and what led them to their decision to become “martyrs” for Islam? What do they know of the real men who were the Hamburg cell? The Hamburg Cell is a psychological drama that explores the lives and minds of the leading figures in the September 11 plot: very different young men with individual psychological and emotional needs and make-ups. The film explores the social, religious and ideological forces that shaped the group in their journey from students in Germany to the perpetrators of the worst terror attack in american history. It examines the tensions between the group, the internal and external pressures on them as their plot approaches its climax, the mechanics of how they carried out the attacks.
