Bitter Moon (1992) follows a British couple, Nigel (Hugh Grant) and Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas), who embark on a cruise to Istanbul to commemorate their seventh wedding anniversary. During the voyage, they cross paths with Oscar (Peter Coyote), an American expatriate confined to a wheelchair and an unpublished novelist, accompanied by his much younger French wife, Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner). Nigel is instantly captivated by the enigmatic and alluring Mimi, which does not go unnoticed by Oscar. Intrigued by Nigel's fascination, Oscar shares a graphic and disturbing account of his and Mimi's tumultuous relationship, which began with intense passion but devolved into a cycle of increasingly cruel and humiliating sexual games. Through a series of flashbacks, it becomes evident that Oscar's manipulative and self-centered behavior has been the destructive force in their relationship, although the dynamics between them will ultimately shift.
