Varan the Unbelievable (1958) begins with the discovery of an unusual butterfly species in an enigmatic valley in Japan, prompting a duo of entomologists to explore further. Their investigation leads them to an unexplored lake, but tragedy strikes as they are caught in a landslide and perish. Yuriko, the sister of one of the deceased scientists, embarks on a journey to uncover the truth, accompanied by entomologist Kenji and journalist Horiguchi. Upon reaching the village where the men were last seen, they learn of a local legend about a colossal beast. Their skepticism fades as they encounter the real-life monster, Varan, who has dwelled in the valley for millennia. As Varan emerges from its secluded habitat, it sets a course for the bustling city of Tokyo.
