Lilja 4-ever (2002) follows the harrowing journey of Lilya, a 16-year-old girl residing in a bleak and impoverished suburb of the former Soviet Union. After her mother relocates to the United States with a new partner, Lilya is left behind, hoping for a reunion that never comes. As letters and financial support fail to arrive, Lilya realizes she has been forsaken. She is compelled to move into a dilapidated, tiny apartment lacking basic amenities like electricity and heating. In her despair, Lilya finds solace in her friendship with Volodya, an 11-year-old boy who occasionally stays with her. Together, they share dreams of a brighter future. Lilya's life takes a turn when she meets Andrei, who offers her a chance to escape her misery by moving to Sweden. Despite Volodya's misgivings, Lilya embarks on this journey, boarding a plane to Sweden with no clear idea of what lies ahead.
