Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River (1967) follows the escapades of George Lester, a man perpetually in pursuit of fortune and success. His relentless quest leads to the dissolution of his marriage when his wife, Pamela, grows weary of their nomadic lifestyle and departs. In her absence, George transforms her family home into a bustling discotheque, only to face legal threats from Pamela upon her return, as she accuses him of fraud for making unauthorized changes. Desperate for quick cash, George turns to his old acquaintance, William Homer, but finds him short on funds. In a daring move, George decides to steal the blueprints for a new drill, which Pamela's suitor, Dudley Heath, is developing. However, George's plans are thwarted when he contracts the mumps, preventing him from attending the crucial meeting. Caught in a bind, George refuses to hand over the plans to Willy unless he receives the money first, while the buyers insist on seeing the merchandise before making the payment.
