Breadcrumbs (2016) delves into the harrowing experiences of twenty-eight former political prisoners who, in 2011, filed a collective criminal complaint against a group of real estate agents. These agents were implicated in systematic tortures and rapes that occurred between 1972 and 1983 during Uruguay's last dictatorship. The film, directed by Manane Rodríguez, an Uruguayan filmmaker based in Spain, explores these horrific events, which were long suppressed. Rodríguez's seventh film is deeply personal, as it is inspired by the true story of her friends. The narrative centers around Liliana Pereira, portrayed by Justina Bustos in her youth and Cecilia Roth in later years. Liliana, an Arts major and mother, was kidnapped, imprisoned, raped, and tortured in the mid-1970s. She also lost custody of her son. After years of exile in Spain, Liliana feels compelled to seek justice and break the oppressive silence, much like other survivors of this dark period. The film was chosen to represent Uruguay in the Oscar race.
