Woman in the Dunes (1964) follows an insect collector who ventures into the desert in search of rare specimens. He is invited by villagers to spend the night in the home of a widow, which is situated at the base of a vast sand pit. The only means of entry and exit is a rope ladder. However, when the entomologist awakens, he discovers the ladder has vanished, leaving him trapped with no way to scale the towering sand walls. As the days pass, an unusual bond develops between the two individuals.
