The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) commences in the rugged terrain of Emyn Muil, where the wandering Hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) realize they are being trailed by the enigmatic Gollum (Andy Serkis). This fickle being, himself twisted by the Ring, offers to lead the Hobbits to the Black Gates of Mordor if they set him free. Sam is wary of their new guide, but Frodo, empathizing with Gollum's past as a Ringbearer, agrees to the bargain. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), the Elf archer Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and the Dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) arrive at the beleaguered kingdom of Rohan. The once-mighty King Theoden (Bernard Hill) has succumbed to Saruman’s malevolent spell, manipulated by his spy, the malevolent Wormtongue (Brad Dourif). Eowyn (Miranda Otto), the King's niece, sees leadership potential in the human warrior Aragorn, though he remains devoted to his love for the Elf Arwen (Liv Tyler) and their shared pact. Gandalf (Ian McKellen), resurrected as Gandalf the White after his epic battle with the Balrog, urges Aragorn to rally the Rohan people and join the last bastion of human resistance – Gondor. As their paths diverge, the Fellowship confronts colossal armies and deceit, while also encountering ancient marvels and the latent power of their people. United, they must resist the formidable forces emanating from the Two Towers – Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the tainted wizard Saruman has amassed a deadly army of 10,000; and Sauron’s stronghold at Barad-dûr, nestled deep within the ominous lands of Mordor.
