The Barber of Siberia (1998) follows the journey of a foreign businessman, portrayed by Richard Harris, who travels to Russia in 1885 with ambitious plans to market an innovative, steam-powered timber harvester in the untamed landscapes of Siberia. Julia Ormond plays his dedicated assistant, who develops romantic feelings for a young Russian military officer, brought to life by Russian actor Oleg Menshikov. Over the course of a decade, she works tirelessly to refine the harvester while navigating the complexities of her love for the officer, who has been banished to Siberia.
