The Apartment (1960) follows the story of C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), an ambitious office clerk who lends his modest apartment to his superiors for their extramarital affairs, hoping to advance his career. Among his benefactors is his ruthless boss, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), who is secretly involved with Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the kind-hearted elevator operator whom Baxter secretly adores. When Sheldrake callously ends his relationship with Fran, she attempts to take her own life, leading to a dramatic intervention by Baxter.
