East-West (Est-Ouest) (1999) unfolds in June 1946, as Stalin extends an invitation to Russian émigrés to return to their homeland. This seemingly benevolent gesture is revealed to be a deceptive ploy. When a group from France arrives in Odessa, only a doctor and his family are spared from execution or imprisonment. The doctor and his French wife, whose passport is confiscated, are sent to Kiev. She is desperate to return to France, while he understands their precarious situation and the need for caution. By luck, she encounters a French actress on tour and seeks her assistance. She also befriends a young swimmer, who later makes a daring escape attempt. Amidst the KGB's watchful eye and dwindling hope for freedom, the couple's resilience, the husband's restraint, and the wife's charm become their most valuable assets.
