Eastern Promises (2007) follows the enigmatic and captivating Nikolai, a Russian-born chauffeur employed by one of the most infamous families in the Eastern European criminal underworld. Led by Semyon, a seemingly affable restaurateur with a sinister and ruthless alter ego, the family's operations are disrupted by Kirill, Semyon's volatile son, who places more trust in Nikolai than in his own father. Nikolai's world takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Anna, a midwife working in a London hospital. Disturbed by the circumstances surrounding the death of a young woman during childbirth, Anna seeks to locate the deceased's family using a diary written in Russian. Unbeknownst to her, delving into the diary's contents inadvertently provokes the wrath of the criminal organization.
