The film chronicles the chaotic two weeks prior to the wedding of Elliot Sherman (Michael Showalter), an obsessive, repressive accountant with an encyclopaedic knowledge of his own ailments. Elliot is a guy who never actually gets the girl. He has been passed over so many times that his deepest neurosis is that he is destined never to end up with the girl of his dreams. Elliot can hardly believe his good fortune, having landed Caroline (Elizabeth Banks) who is beautiful, and sophisticated. As wedding preparations reach levels of frenetic proportions, out of the blue appears Bradley (Justin Theroux), fresh from adventures in exotic places, once Caroline's great love, thought to be lost and now found. Elliot is thrown into a state of turmoil: his worst nightmare is becoming a reality and Caroline will surely leave him for a man infinitely more handsome than himself. In desperate need of some solid female advice, he turns to his eccentric new office temp, Cecil (Michelle Williams). She is instantly smitten by Elliot and entirely compromised in her new position as his romantic counsellor...
